Wirelessly connecting vehicles among each other allows them to cooperate, making traffic safer, faster, and more energy efficient. For this, a broad range of wireless technologies can be employed, all with individual benefits and drawbacks. Previously, technologies like WLAN, ETSI ITS-G5, and mobile broadband (4G, 5G) have been explored. These technologies are ideal for large cities, where traffic is dense and mobile broadband coverage is good. Little consideration, however, has so far been given to technologies that can span very large distances.
Goals of the thesis
This thesis will investigate the suitability of supporting “traditional” wireless technologies for connecting vehicles with low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies like Narrowband IOT (NB-IoT) or LoRaWAN. For this, a preliminary literature study of the suitability of selected LPWAN technologies will be conducted, followed by the implementation of a single technology as a model in our existing Veins simulator. A comparative simulation study of traditional vs. LPWAN technologies concludes the thesis.
